Demetrice Smith-Mutegi, EdD

Assistant Professor of STEM Education in the Klipsch Educators College, Marian University

Demetrice Smith-Mutegi is an assistant professor of STEM education in the Klipsch Educators College of Marian University, where she has been a faculty member since 2019. She has also served as the program coordinator for the Academy for Teaching and Learning School Administrator’s program from 2017 to 2019. Demetrice teaches foundational courses to P-12 pre-service teachers and science methods courses to elementary pre-service teachers. Prior to her work in higher education, she served in K-12 public schools as a STEM educator in North Carolina, Maryland, and Indiana.


Demetrice’s current research interests center on investigating the motivations, beliefs, and experiences of Black students as it relates to STEM and studying factors that impact the career decision-making of Black STEM teachers. Demetrice has also actively collaborated with other researchers in other disciplines to study the impact of informal STEM learning experiences on Black girl participants. She has presented her work at several international, national, and local conferences including American Educational Research Association (AERA), National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST), National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) and the Association for Science Teacher Education (ASTE). She currently serves on a national standing committee with NSTA and on the board of directors with the Hoosier Association for Science Teaching, Inc. (HASTI).


Demetrice completed graduate studies in science education at Morgan State University (Ed.D.) and East Carolina University (M.A.T) and her undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
