W. Carson Byrd is Faculty Director of Research Initiatives in the National Center for Institutional Diversity at the University of Michigan and Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Louisville. Dr. Byrd’s work aims to uncover and link the manifestations of racialization within educational environments, especially colleges and universities, which can simultaneously amplify and reduce broader patterns of social inequalities in society. His work also explores the racialized experiences of college students and their navigation of different degree pathways, and the racialization of science and knowledge production. This research agenda has resulted in publications including a solo-authored book (Poison in the Ivy: Race Relations and the Reproduction of Inequality on Elite College Campuses, Rutgers UP), a co-edited book (Intersectionality and Higher Education: Identity and Inequality on College Campuses, Rutgers UP), and publications in journals such as the ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, Du Bois Review, Equity & Excellence in Education, Ethnic and Racial Studies, and the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, among others. He is also the author of the forthcoming book, Behind the Diversity Numbers: Achieving Racial Equity on Campus (Harvard Education Press).
